One of these tells that when the Monkey King was still only a Monkey Prince, he faced all five Masters and bested them through trickery.Though Stephen Chow's 'Journey to the West' series has been the more buzzed-about one in the last few years, director Soi Cheang has been studiously building up his own 'Monkey King' franchise. Master Po knows several tales about the Monkey-King. In some parts of the Cathayan south, the Monkey King is said to be a slight spider-monkey who jumps upon the shoulder of allies and enemies, whispering half-truths and lies. On the eastern coast, legends tell of a gluttonous orangutan with an exposed belly covered with unsightly boils. In northern Cathay, he is said to be a raging gorilla, in the west, a baboon-like creature with golden hair and an engorged rear (for the Monkey King is always in heat!). ![]() AppearanceÄescriptions of the Monkey King vary wildly depending on region and local legends. After this revolt failed, the false ambassador vanished. Dien would cause trouble in the Western Empire's court by aiding revolution in its capital. However, he was killed by Dien, who posed as the Monkey King's ambassador in his place. The Monkey King later sent an ambassador to the western Empire of Man. This situation has led the Cathayan Dragons to reluctantly allow the Monkey King to continue his rule over the mountains, rather than risk the border falling to the Indans or the vile Snakemen. However, he has been forced to call upon the Monkey Warriors to defend the southern borders of Grand Cathay against the Kings of Ind and the Nagas of Kuresh in the past, much to the Monkey King's amusement. Li Dao, the Fire Dragon, who rules over the Southern Provinces, including the Mountains of Heaven, has tried to capture the Monkey King. The Monkey King is said to still be active in the present age, living high in the Mountains of Heaven with his Monkey Warriors. At the key moment of the conflict, the Dragon Emperor and Moon Empress returned four centuries after their disappearance in 2380 IC and helped their children defeat the Monkey King, who fled into the south. The Monkey King's usurpation of power was enough of a threat to eventually force the warring Cathayan Dragon siblings to unite and fight for their father's throne. At some point, the Monkey King expelled Dien Ch'ing, a worshipper of the Chaos God Chi'an Chi, from Grand Cathay, causing Dien to bear a grudge against him. Once the Monkey King seized power he installed Warlord Kishkik of Clan Eshin as an advisor, and began trade with the Skaven Under-Empire. These events would go down in history as the "Time of Darkness and Disharmony." This division allowed the Monkey King to expand to new territories and eventually claim dominion over the entire Cathayan Empire. The Dragon Emperor's children fought against one another, and Grand Cathay was essentially divided into warring states. This event coincided with invasions by the forces of Chaos from the Northern Wastes and the disappearance of the Dragon Emperor and the Moon Empress in 1999 IC. At some point the entity called the Monkey King rose to power in southern Cathay, becoming a threat to the unity of the Celestial Empire.
